David became a governor of Stanbridge Earls School in 2001, serving on the Education Committee, and has been chairman of the governing body since 2005. After a history degree and postgraduate certificate in education from Cambridge, he taught in three independent schools, variously as resident boarding house tutor, hockey coach, housemaster and head of history. He was then headmaster of Clayesmore, a boarding and day school in Dorset, for fourteen years. Until recently, he was a Reporting Inspector for the Independent Schools Inspectorate. He has been a governor of an independent preparatory school, and he governs a maintained selective school in Kent. David is married to Anne, who has taught personal, social and health education as well as pupils with learning difficulties. Their three grown-up children and five grandchildren keep them busy. David enjoys gardening and dinghy sailing, plays erratic golf, and is much involved in his local Anglican church.
