science
In Years 7 and 8 pupils are taught a co-ordinated approach to Science.
Major topics are taught and revisited to allow opportunities to consolidate
and extend both knowledge and understanding. The Key Stage 3 National
Curriculum for Science is followed and emphasis is put on the acquisition
of practical skills as much as the need to develop reasoning skills.
In Year 9 pupils are taught the three separate disciplines of Biology,
Chemistry and Physics and are entered for the National Key Stage 3 SATS
tests in May. Time is then usually available for a team-building challenge
involving initiative, resourcefulness and the swimming pool!
In Years 10 and 11 we offer GCSE Single Award Science to all pupils.
The more-able may opt for extra, timetabled lessons and convert this into
a Double Award Science (Two GCSE's). All three disciplines are studies
at this level using the modular approach which has been successful for
most students.
Pupils who are unsuccessful at GCSE in year 11 may wish to stay on into
the Sixth Form and take GCSE Human Biology and Health.
We offer the Sixth Form AS and A2 qualifications in Biology, Chemistry
and Physics.
