physical education
Pupils in years 7 and 8 experience a wide range of curricular and extra-curricular
sporting activities. With major team games and swimming on a daily basis;
hockey, football, rugby, netball, cricket, rounders and basketball are
all catered for. Specific PE lessons allow the extra dimensions of smaller
group volleyball, gymnastics, trampolining, tennis, badminton and health
related fitness to be sampled and developed further.
In year 9, more individual choices are encouraged so that pupils can
still experience a full range of sporting activity, yet develop the skills
and abilities that are specific to their preferred sporting interests.
This is continued throughout years 10 to 13 with the enjoyment of
sport and development of healthy minds and bodies being the primary
targets. Opportunity to play regularly and participate in a full range
of House and School sporting fixtures is a major part of Stanbridge life.
GCSE Physical Education, with its 50% practical element, allows pupils
opportunity to take their physical abilities and develop them alongside
the theoretical requirements of an ever increasing area of further study.
Pupils are assessed in four practical activities and an undertaking to
fully participate in extra-curricular and inter-school sport is expected.
AS and A2 Physical Education aims for the pupil to specialise, initially
in two and finally in one, specific sport on a practical basis. Pupils
continue to have over 40% of practical coursework. However, the theoretical
basis of both courses develops historical and sociological perspectives
of sport in the UK and abroad, physiology, exercise and training methods
and testing, the psychology of sport and / or biomechanics.
Both in examination and non-examination areas the ethos of the PE department
influences everything that we do. All that we ever ask is for you
to give the best that you can give and enjoy the sport that you play!
