english as an additional language

English as an Additional Language (EAL) operates within the Accelerated Learning Centre and is provided by qualified teachers who hold either the Cambridge TEFLA or Trinity qualification. Tuition is provided on a one-to-one basis. Pupils are given an individual assessment and a programme is tailored to meet their specific needs. We have a wealth of resources to draw upon which are up-to-date and relevant as well as an array of computer software.

Some EAL teachers also hold a Special Needs qualification so that should a pupil need help in both areas, then it is provided. EAL teachers have close links with the other specialist literacy teachers, as well as with our two speech and language therapists.

Pupils are encouraged to take Cambridge ESOL exams at the appropriate level for them. In the past, pupils have taken KET, PET and FCE. We have also tutored pupils through TOEFL (for further education in America) and IELTS (general level only). Usually, if a pupil has a specific examination request, then we will try to meet it where appropriate and possible.

EAL teachers at Stanbridge have many years experience working with second language learners in an English school environment. They offer vital help in the very important area of subject specific vocabulary. It is our practice to meet with subject teachers and gain word lists and topics to learn with the pupil. Vocabulary learning techniques are varied including word cards, mind-maps and notebooks. Where necessary and appropriate an EAL teacher may also attend the pupil’s subject lesson for in-class support. This has proved very useful and successful.

Occasionally it has been necessary to provide extensive accelerated English tuition and we have been able to arrange this using a local Language school in Salisbury. A qualified teacher has visited a pupil here in the evenings for extra tuition and pupils have also attended this school prior to joining Stanbridge, where their English skills have not been up to the required standard.
